The Senior Audit Manager will provide oversight of internal audits of varying complexity and scope over Eastern Bank’s operations, including Finance, Operations, and compliance-focused audits as well as leading fraud investigations.  Working with the Chief Auditor, this individual will also be responsible for monitoring risks across all business units and helping to develop audit strategy to assess the control framework in relation to such risks.  This individual will be responsible for managing a team of experienced professionals in the execution of the audit strategy.
  • Works with the Chief Auditor in the development and execution of a comprehensive audit program that is responsive to the operational, financial, compliance, and control risks within the Bank, including identifying and evaluating the company’s risk areas through a risk assessment process.
  • Sets scope of audits with the Chief Auditor, assists in helping managers/lead auditors define and outline audit approach assists in guidance for research and reviews best practices for audit area.
  • Works with external auditors to maximize reliance on internal audit work for optimal efficiency and cost control.
  • Manage the planning, documentation, staff assignment, performance and reporting of regular periodic internal audits of various departments within the Bank, including audit selection, application of the audit approach, performance of selected audit procedures in high-risk areas, review of audit work papers, generation of audit reports, ensuring implementation of processes to rectify internal control deficiencies and / or improve operations deficiencies.
  • Assist Chief Auditor in development of staff through appropriate hiring, development and training of all staff in audit approach, documentation skills, audit technology, and the industry standards.  Set performance expectations for team members, provides coaching throughout the audit process, and deliver formal feedback.
  • Work with and oversee audit managers and staff to plan, design, and execute internal audit activities, including documenting business processes and procedures, assessing design of internal controls, selection of key controls, testing the effectiveness of key controls and communicating the results of the review.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of financial and operational internal control methodologies and terminologies (e.g. - COSO), process and control industry standards, risk management practices and techniques, and internal audit process, technology and tools for planning, design, performance, testing, and reporting.
  • Display a high degree of professionalism and leadership and possess proficient organizational, analytical, and project management skills. 
  •  Facilitate effective communication and coordination with business management at all levels and must have excellent, written, verbal, interpersonal skills.
  • Stay abreast of industry and professional trends and make recommendations to senior audit management regarding industry best practices including recommending changes and monitoring to assure implementation.
  • Stay abreast on evolving regulatory requirements impacting areas covered.
  • Effectively collaborate and manage relationships with key stakeholders including various levels of management throughout organization, external auditors, regulators, etc.
  • Partner with risk management, compliance, legal, and other assurance groups establishing strong work relationships while maintaining independence.
  • Perform continuous monitoring to recognize patterns and trends with risk and controls implications; and to identify emerging risks and develop test procedures to cover these risks.
  • Manager expected to be a team member or team leader on various special projects.
  • Ensure consistent application of methodologies, policies, and alignment of resource to ensure consistent team approach.
  • Drive use and adoption of automated software tools and stay abreast of current technology trends.

Job Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline
  • A CPA, CIA, MBA, or other Certification is required
  • A minimum 8+ years of progressive experience in a combination of public accounting and/or internal audit experience with increasing scope of responsibilities and a proven track record of building effective teams to deliver value to the business.  Candidates with at least 5+ years of bank auditing experience strongly preferred
  • 5+ years of managerial and/or supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of accounting processes and internal controls including experience with the COSO Framework, IIA Standards, and audit techniques
  • Ability to maintain objectiveness and independence
  • Must have strong organizational skills, project management skills, and capability to manage multiple projects with minimal direction in a dynamic and fluid environment
  • Must have the ability to prioritize and simultaneously handle deadlines, managing timely satisfaction of ad hoc requests and regular deliverables
  • Must be an articulate communicator with strong written and verbal skills
  • Must have management experience and demonstrate an ability to build strong relationships, lead, and develop subordinates and complete thorough reviews
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications and have experience in the preparation and analysis of audit data through computer-assisted audit tools
  • Must have/ maintain current knowledge base of audit industry practices and ensure best practices are always considered when performing audits.
